"Duty Free" Vic Chesnutt The Salesman And Bernadette
I have a wonderful memory of Chestnutt and company (members of the huge alt-country orchestra Lambchop) performing this song on the Conan O'Brien show in 1998. (And why didn't I tape it-damn it all to hell!) Wheelchair-bound Chestnutt (from a teenage car accident) was discovered by R.E.M's Michael Stipe. This laconic song makes me think of a band on a float meandering through a sleepy Southern town and no one is paying attention to them because they have broken away from the rest of the parade. Ends with a whistling chorus. Chestnutt on his songwriting: "Other people write about the bling and the booty. I write about the pus and the gnats. To me, that's beautiful." Excellent.
